UCI WORLD CUP 1999 - MARIBOR, SLOVENIA

We won the UCI Rainbow award for best DH race of the year.
It started out as an idea I put in Andy’s head, "Hey, let’s do a DH World Cup in Slovenia.
I am tried of XC, and I know I could design an awesome DH." So, I put together a bid for the
UCI, and Andy got the Slovenian Cycling Federation to sign-off on it. Andy was by far the best
race-organizing partner I have had, and it made a big difference. I had a vision for the type of
course I wanted to build, and with Andy and Binko’s help we made one of the world’s greatest
DownHill courses. Personally, it is one of the things that I have done in my life, that I am most
proud of, and to be supported by such great people was truly an honor.

Rainbow Award
What can I say, the greatest honor in
World Cup organizing is to win the
Rainbow award. Andy and I got it in 99.

Attila Jump
Course designer extrodinare Glen Jacobs
work with Sasha to make an intense Dual.
Attila Nagy (Hun) takes the big jumps.

Dual jump
We ended the Dual using the big jump
into the finish area that I set-up
at the end of the DH course.

Dual crash 1
The Dual race was really exciting on the
steep technical course. Here you can see
that the Giant rider cuts off Lopes (USA).

Dual crash 2
Brian Lopes was pissed after that, but
he was able to make up for it later.
Of course, the crowd loved it!

Dual Jumper
When you click on this thumbnail to
see the full photo, you will see how
long a jump the riders had to make.

Miles Rockwell
Miles Rockwell has always been one of
my favorite riders, and we have had
some interesting times at races.
07/20/02
Chairlift
The riders had to take three chairlifts
to get to the top of the 5.4 km course.
It only took 5+minutes to get back down.

Carolanne
One of the most intense parts of the course
was a "V" canyon section that I put in.
Here is race winner Carolane Causson in it.

Cully jumping
Here is one of my favorite riders, Dave
Cullinan (USA) at the end of the first "V"
canyon as it intersects with the second.

Missy
This is a top view of Missy Giove as
she makes the freaky "V" canyon
intersection.
07/20/02
Rocks and Roll
For me, "Rocks and Roll" was one of my
favorite sections of the course. It
took me 5 trys till I could get down it.
07/20/02
Rocks crash
Of course, during the race severial riders
like Dalma Kiss (Hun) crashed on the bigger
rocks.
07/20/02
Missy Rocks
Riders like Missy Giove told me that
they had a lot of "fun" on Rocks and Roll.
I would say so!
07/20/02
Peat on Rocks
During the final, Steve Peat was the fastest
thru the rocks. Notice the course tape in
his rear brake, which meant he had none.
07/20/02
Shaun Palmer
After the "V" sections, I put in this great
drop-off over big slippery roots.
Here is Shaun Palmer taking it.
07/20/02
Steve Peat
On the other side of the tree, I painted
a Bullseye on the trunk. Steve Peat thought
it was funny as here rode past it.
07/20/02
cholla trail
A birds eye view of a part of the course
before it goes into the Aleluja drop-off
forest section.

2 riders
Here is "Cully" launching himself into space
on the jump at the end of the DH run.
Big Air for sure!
07/20/02
U7 and Mike
At the end of the day, it was a French
sweep, with Nico and Causson winning,
with Peat and Donovan second.

Dual course
This is the end of the course, and we
built (Sasha and crew) the Dual course
in the same area.
