UCI WORLD CUP 2002 - MARIBOR, SLOVENIA

A visit to see our baby, all grown-up.
Maribor not only hosted the 1999 DH World Cup, but 2000,2001 and 2002 as well. In 2000,
the UCI World Cup regulations changed, so the course had to be shortened. Still, Binko and
Andy found a way to do that without altering the original course vision that I had developed.
It was really great to go back and see what three years had done to the course. It was like
seeing your baby grow-up and mature. Andy and I are no-longer part of the organizing team,
which meant for 2002 we could kick-back and enjoy ourselves...which we did!

Dual course
Hey, we won the UCI Rainbow award for
best DH World Cup in 1999. So, 2002 is
just whip cream on top. Am I drunk?

Attila Jump
This is a view of the last part of the
course, as well as the city of Maribor
and looking toward Graz Austria.

Dual jump
The DH course follows the ski slope
running down the center of the
photo.

Dual crash 1
The Dual race was really exciting, and
was run down the street in from of the
great party place - Takos!
07/20/02
Dual crash 2
We loved the cars, which some
riders were able to jump over
and some weren't.

Dual Jumper
Anyways, the crowd loved it, and it
was great to see everyone having a
great time.

Miles Rockwell
This was the first time a 4X race
was held in Maribor. It was a steep
course with some big air.
07/20/02
Chairlift
For the 4X, the finish jump of the
DH was used, and the result was some
big air jumps.
07/20/02
Carolanne
These photos were taken during the 4X
rider practice runs, but there was
still a big crowd.
07/20/02
Cully jumping
Katrina Miller is one of the few women
riders who could get big air on the
final jump.
07/20/02
Missy
This was one of my favorite views of the
4X,as the riders launched themselves in
to space. Go Buck Rogers!
07/20/02
Rocks and Roll
This is the second to last birm, and was
a place of contact and crashes. One guy
jumped the birm, and broke something.
07/20/02
Rocks crash
The shutter bumps before the final jump
kinda shook all the riders up and made
sure they didn't get board.
07/20/02
Missy Rocks
This photo shows just how big the final
jump is. How many time on your normal
bike ride do you jump this distance?
07/20/02
Peat on Rocks
After the birm jump, is the last birm -
this rider landed in the birm and hit so
hard he popped the tubes out of his tires.
07/20/02
Shaun Palmer
Cedric Gracias and Wade Boots have a
quick chat about the course and how
to deal with it.
07/20/02
Steve Peat
This is a view of the 4X race, as it
starts. Mike King ended up winning
it, and boy was he happy about it!
07/20/02
cholla trail
Mean while on the DH hill course, the
riders had fun on some of the more
intense and faster sections.
07/20/02
2 riders
This section has a jump which is
visable even from the finish, making
for a good show.
07/20/02
U7 and Mike
Having an average grade of 22% mean
that the riders needed some pretty
deep birms to make some of the turns.

Sorry about the crappy photo, but my
little camera was pushing it here. I
thought it was cool to do this.
07/20/02

This birm featured some real high
speeds, and many times the riders
were parallel to the ground.
07/20/02
U7 and Mike
This is just before one of my
favorite parts of the course
because it is kind of weird.
07/20/02

Here a rider is running through
the turn, which is like a snake
with a little jump after this.
07/20/02

Rocks and Roll only seems to get
better, and in 2002 it is longer
which made for a fun time.
07/20/02
U7 and Mike
For much of the practice runs, the
course was dry, but for race day
started raining.
07/20/02
c
The areas in the forest didn't get
very wet on race day, so all the
riders rode the dry rocks on mud tires.

A another beautiful view of Maribor
and Graz, Austria, just before the
riders enter Rocks and Roll.

U7 and Mike
Here is another one of my favorite
sections - Aleluja. It is a good
test of off-camber turning.
07/20/02

The final strech just before the
final launch in to space jump that
puts the rider into the finish area.
